Knife carry law in Czechia

Czech weapons law (Act 90/2024, in force since 1 Jan 2026) covers firearms and similar devices, not knives. No national offence for simply carrying a knife was found, and police and the Interior Ministry say carrying is not restricted. Owners of premises, transport operators, and assemblies can set their own limits. Threatening or injuring with a knife is an offence.

This summary rests on mostly official, partly secondary sources. Open questions are listed at the end. Treat anything marked unclear as a reason to leave the item at home.

How we apply the law

Rules are checked from the top. The first one that fits decides. Every verdict on this site comes from this list, not from hand typed cells.

  1. 1No restriction foundAny knife or tool, automatic or gravity or flick opening

Switchblades, OTF and butterfly knives are not weapons under Act 90/2024 (it covers firearms, gas weapons and similar devices) and no other national carry ban was found. Expect more police attention; retailer or venue rules may still apply.

  2. 2No restriction foundAny knife or tool, double edged

No Czech statute found that distinguishes double-edged blades for carrying. Daggers draw attention but the weapons act and the offences act do not regulate them.

  3. 3No restriction foundA folding knife, a fixed blade, a multitool, a keychain tool or scissors only

No national offence for carrying a knife in public was found. The Interior Ministry spokesman says legislation does not limit carrying knives in public spaces. Premises owners and carriers set their own rules.

  4. 4No restriction foundAnything else

Catch-all: no national restriction on carrying any knife-type item was found. Check municipal decrees, venue rules and assembly rules for the specific place.

Specifications come from the makers. Where a maker does not publish the cutting edge length, a length rule can only be answered if even the full blade length falls on one side of the line. Otherwise the result is unclear, on purpose.

What the verdict does not cover

Public transport and restricted zones
No national ban. The Interior Ministry (Jul 2025) said no ban on knives in transport is planned and that carriers set their own rules in their transport terms. The national transport code excludes loaded firearms from baggage; the Prague PID terms (1 Jan 2026) exclude loaded firearms and 'dangerous substances and objects' that may cause injury and do not name knives. Brno DPMB says an unsecured knife is not allowed and staff may exclude you and fine up to 1,500 Kč (as quoted by iROZHLAS). České dráhy current terms not read. No 'weapon-free zones' found in national law.
Schools, workplaces and events
Assemblies (demonstrations): participants may not carry firearms, ammunition or explosives, and not other objects that can injure if circumstances or behaviour suggest intended violence (Act 84/1990 § 7(3)); an offence under § 14(2)(a) carries a fine up to 15,000 Kč. Private premises, venues, schools and employers can ban knives under house rules; school and workplace rules not verified.
In a vehicle
No knife-specific rule for cars was found. Unlike firearms, knives are not covered by the weapons act's carrying and transport provisions. Not verified against the road-traffic act.
Age limits
No statutory minimum age for owning or carrying a knife was found in the laws read. Knives are outside the weapons act, whose adult-age rules (e.g. category NO weapons) apply to listed weapons. Retailers may set their own limit. Not confirmed by an authority.
Buying and importing
Knives are not regulated by Act 90/2024 (no knife category in text or annexes), so no weapons-act licence, registration or notification appears to apply to buying a knife from an EU shop. Import rules from outside the EU (customs, product law) were not checked.
Penalties
No fine for plain carrying found. Related: refusing a police or authority order is a přestupek up to 10,000 Kč (Act 251/2016 § 5); carrying objects at an assembly in breach of § 7(3), up to 15,000 Kč; breach of a municipal decree, up to 100,000 Kč (Act 251/2016 § 4). Police and city police can demand surrender of anything usable as a weapon when violence is threatened (Act 273/2008 § 35; Act 553/1991 § 14). Using a knife to threaten or injure is a přestupek or a crime.
Recent changes
Act 90/2024 Sb. replaced Act 119/2002 Sb. on 1 Jan 2026 (physical gun documents abolished, new categories R1-R4, PO, NO). The consolidated text on zakonyprolidi.cz showed only version 1 (valid 1 Jan 2026 to 31 Dec 2027) on 2026-10-26. Neither the new act's text nor its annexes mention knives; the old act was not read.
Pending changes
Interior Ministry said in Jul 2025 that a blanket knife ban in transport is not planned and not needed. No Czech bill restricting knife carrying was found as of 2026-10-26, but the search was not exhaustive.

What we could not confirm

  • Municipal decrees (obecně závazné vyhlášky): no decree banning knife carrying was found, but there is no central register and we did not search every city. Prague's decrees were not checked against knives.
  • České dráhy SPPO (change 6, from 14 Dec 2025) and DPP/other operators' full terms were not read; only PID's 2026 terms and the national transport code were.
  • No statutory age limit for buying or carrying knives was found; absence was not confirmed by an authority.
  • Import from outside the EU, and any 'ballistic knife' (blade-firing) rule: nothing found in Act 90/2024, but customs and other laws were not checked.
  • Criminal-law consequences beyond § 118 (e.g. dangerous threatening, rioting) were not read or quoted.
  • No Czech court decision on carrying a knife was reviewed.
  • Rules at courts, airports, schools and stadiums depend on house rules; not verified.
